Verify the lawyer through the relevant official licensing authority. Confirm the firm serves the jurisdiction and currently handles the type of matter you describe. A directory category or website is a starting point, not proof of fit.
Compare experience without rankings
Ask for a description of relevant work and the lawyer’s role, not promises or a predicted result. “Best” lists, advertising language, and an unrelated verdict do not answer who will handle your facts.
Understand the working relationship
Ask who performs day-to-day work, who makes recommendations, how routine messages are answered, how major decisions are explained, and whether the matter may be referred or co-counselled.
Read the agreement before deciding
Compare scope, fee terms, expenses, termination, file handling, and client responsibilities. Ask for written answers when a term is unclear. Do not rely on an oral summary that conflicts with the document.
